editor’s note

DO YOU USE YOUR ART FOR GOOD? Each year, I look forward to the October/November issue of QUILTING ARTS. Not only do the autumn colors of our New England landscape influence the palette of artwork in the magazine (my heart beats a bit faster every time I see burnt umber maple leaves against a pale blue sky); they also usher in the season of kindness and appreciation. Golden fields of grain are harvested and baked into bread; pumpkins dappled with green and orange become a ripe symbol of plenty; the deep purple of an eggplant inspires a charity quilt. The sights, smells, tastes, and colors of autumn are ingrained in our collective consciousness and, quite often, reflected in our quilts. And frequently, those quilts are used for good. Keeping this in…

it’s your turn

Dear QUILTING ARTS, I saw the April/May issue at the library and became immensely inspired by the “Make Your Own Pet Portrait” on the cover. I ran out and bought a copy. Let me preface that I just received a sewing machine for my birthday in November and have very little experience with sewing. But this issue got me motivated to try the challenge of creating a cat. Then I fell in love with a picture I saw online of the happiest smiling dog from our local humane society and wondered if I could somehow duplicate that happy dog—and I did! I am donating the pillow to the humane society to help them raise money and will continue to make more for them. I don’t think I would have done this…

a better world heroes working for the greater good

there are those among us who make personal sacrifices, who forgo comfort and safety, while striving to make the world a better place. They are persistent and dogged in their determination to lift, to save, to shed light, and to inspire. They are the helpers, the speakers, the ones who act. They soldier on in spite of persecution or personal risk. They seek to help one lone person or the entire planet. They represent the very best of humanity. This juried invitational exhibit of 40 quilts honors these women and men. Curated and juried by Susan Brubaker Knapp and Lyric Montgomery Kinard, this exhibition premiers at the International Quilt Festival, Houston, in 2019 and will travel to other notable venues for two years. The following pages represent a selection of these quilts. For…

in the spotlight patricia kennedy-zafred

“I barely remember not stitching. Before I ever walked into a school, my grandmother taught me to spin a knot at the end of a threaded needle and to stitch rows on fabric, practicing to get them neat, straight, and small. Making almost all of my clothes as a teen and into early adulthood—including my wedding dress—I honed my skills. This created a perfect backdrop to later pursue the world of quilts. Educated in journalism and photography, I am a storyteller, printmaker, and quilter who creates works of art. My work has been a prolonged exercise in trial and error, self-teaching, and study. I strive for quilts that make my heart sing, but the greatest satisfaction is evoking the same reaction from others. My recent quilts capture a time and place in…
