a home of your own

This issue of Style at Home has me thinking a lot about decorating your home in a deeply personal way. What I love about the homes in this issue is that the homeowners and designers collaborated to create really unique spaces, using colour and pattern to bring out the personalities of the people that live there. Rebecca Hay, who designed the fabulous room on our cover (for the story, see page 54), sums it up perfectly: “Adding playful bits of personality is what lets a home become your life story.” What a beautiful idea! I also love how we explore how to design a functional family home that works for all ages, from babies to busy parents. Calgary designers Reena Sotropa and Alanna Dunn did exactly that by creating custom storage…

WE’RE INSPIRED BY… saturated hues employed in drop-dead gorgeous patterns, like this Seville Collection wallpaper from Cole & Son. pure & simple

Luscious, deep colours and velvety finishes that are soft to touch and on the eye are reason enough to try paints from Belgian-based Pure & Original. Need more convincing? How about all-natural pigments, minimal chemicals and extremely low-VOC emissions? Some are water-based and emit no VOCs. The best news: Pure & Original is now available on this side of the pond at Montreal’s Ramacieri Soligo.…

Safe & Secure These days, the home tech market is burgeoning with products to increase safety and security around the house. Phones let you access surveillance video, control safety lighting, remotely unlock the door for kids or deliveries, open garage doors and monitor all the comings and goings while you’re not home. “Lights turn on as soon as someone walks towards the door or they blink red when the smoke detector sets off the alarm,” says Nancy Fouad, of Signify. “All these functions can be controlled through a single device, no matter where you are in the world.” One new gadget is Ring, a doorbell with a tiny camera that lets you see who is knocking from the comfort of your sofa, so there’s no need to pause Netflix! These devices…

the great escape

From the Scottish lads we love – we mean Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan, of course – comes the new book, Escapology: Modern Cabins, Cottages and Retreats (Figure 1 Publishing, October 2020). Expect to be wowed by immersive pictorial visits to 24 homes around the world (including Colin and Justin’s Ontario getaway, pictured here). That’s followed up by a deep dive into what makes each home work in terms of architecture, interior design and as escapes into the natural world. There is a ton of useful info for those dreaming about or planning their ideal escape, but even if a second home isn’t on your radar, Escapology is really about creating a home that best suits you. “We both love home design that references the people who live there,” says…
