letter from the editor

(AMY ETRA)IT WAS A HOT, BUGGY AUGUST MORNING. My golden, Gracie, and I had just finished hiking a short section of the Appalachian Trail in Western Massachusetts that rose about 650 feet in less than a mile. We were sprawled under a shade tree where the trail leveled out, sharing a bottle of water, when two other panting, sweat-drenched northbound hikers arrived, a young man and woman. They were lean and fit and fully outfitted. I took them to be thru-hikers, and I was right. “My name’s Platypus,” the woman said without explaining her chosen trail moniker, “and this is Smokey.” The man nodded while wringing sweat from his headband. They’d started out in April at Springer Mountain, Georgia, with the goal of reaching Mount Katahdin in Maine before winter set…

what prayer can do

the reassignmentCOOKING SHOW. RERUN. INFOMERCIAL. I flipped TV channels mindlessly, the same way I’d been doing everything since God took my husband away. Carl and I had been married 45 years. We fell in love at 18 and wed at 20. I knew I had a lot to be thankful for in my life, but I couldn’t feel anything but my loss. I pressed the arrow key on the remote. Why didn’t you heal him, God? I’d asked that same hopeless question a million times. The movie I landed on was one I knew well, We Were Soldiers. The story takes place in Vietnam during the war. In my mind, I saw Carl back when he was a young soldier who’d just completed his training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. “We…

the christmas story

Quilt by Kimberly Haylock, based on a panel in the book A Stained Glass Christmas. “I enlarged the faces of Mary and Gabriel and printed them on fabric sheets. The panel was made by Fra Paolo di Mariotto da Gambassi in about 1509.”GOD SENT THE angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee, to a virgin who was engaged to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary. When the angel came to her, he said, “Rejoice, favored one! The Lord is with you!” She was confused by these words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Mary. God is honoring you. Look! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name…

I needed clothes and you clothed me.—MATTHEW 25:36I’D FOUND NOTHING at the department store’s Giant Pre-Christmas Sale. Crowds of shoppers. Harried salespeople. Why did I bother coming? I thought as I headed for the exit. Then I stopped. The young woman was standing in the children’s department, exactly where she’d been when I’d passed through an hour earlier. She was still flicking through the clothes on a rack marked “Final Clearance: Thirty Percent Off Already-Discounted Merchandise.” She pulled out a small pink snowsuit, looked at the price, put it back, then took out a little girl’s coat with a furry white collar.Afraid she’d see me watching her, I sat down and pretended to study the offerings in the store flyer. The young woman wandered to a display of children’s shoes,…
