IT'S well over two months since Prime Minster Boris Johnson announced the lockdown, and while some restrictions have been eased, with more in the pipeline, there is no firm consensus on how a high level of 'normality' is re-established. The fact people are permitted 'to visit a public open space for the purposes of open-air recreation to promote their physical or mental health or emotional well-being' was a great step forward, provided it is not abused. From discussions I've had with friends and colleagues who have been self-isolating, they too want to escape the lockdown to provide some respite from their domestic surroundings, but they also want to feel safe; and here is the elephant in the room - the overarching fear factor of contracting the coronavirus. are road schemes getting priority over rail?

Away from the gloomy news about the coronavirus was the unexpected announcement of the 10 projects successful in gaining grants in the first round of the Ideas Funding project - part of the next step to develop a business case, with the aim of reopening new stations or returning passenger services to closed or freight-only lines. While the news was welcome, the accompanying press release from the Department for Transport was inaccurate, lacking coherent detail and worst of all, seemed hastily prepared. It talked of 'reinstatement of lines' - although four lines already exist! In one case the 'reinstatement' meant a passing loop to permit more services. east midlands unveils 25-year rail expansion plan for toton hs2 hub

MORE than 20 villages, towns and cities across the East Midlands will gain fast, frequent links to the Toton High Speed 2 hub under ambitious proposals unveiled by Midlands Connect on May 28. New rail, tram and bus links will feed into the HS2 interchange from Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Newark, Matlock, Mansfield and Long Eaton, among others, under the transport body's £2.7billion three-phase plan. 10years Phase One of the scheme, priced at £455million, could be operational within 10 years, well before the expected opening of HS2's eastern leg from Birmingham to Leeds via Toton, and includes an extension of the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) light rail system from Toton Lane to Long Eaton via the HS2 East Midlands Hub, and four trains per hour to Toton from Leicester, Derby and Nottingham -the latter…

diverted class 88s run full length of ecml

EXTRA freight paths created by the current reduction in scheduled passenger services allowed Direct Rail Services Class 88s to run the full length of the East Coast Main Line (ECML) for the first time on May 16-17. Weekend engineering work on its usual West Coast Main Line route has seen DRS using Class 66s to haul Mossend to Daventry intermodal trains via the ECML and Midland Main Line in recent weeks. However, the new path allowed electric traction to be used throughout, running via Edinburgh, the ECML and the North London line to reach the southern end of the West Coast Main Line. raib report laments fatal safety lapses

THE Chief Inspector of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has called for renewed vigilance in his annual review for 2019 after a bad year for fatal accidents involving railway workers. The RAIB published four reports relating to fatal accidents (three members of the public and one member of staff) in 2019, and it is currently investigating three further staff fatalities. Chief inspector Simon French highlighted the tragic deaths of two track workers on the South Wales Main Line at Margam last July, the death of a train driver caught between two trains at Tyseley in December 2019, and the more recent fatal accident involving a track worker at Roade, on the West Coast Main Line, on April 8, and has called for a number of improvements to the way on-track maintenance…

network rail wants 80% of british network electrified by 2050

NETWORK Rail is recommending to Government that 80% of the UK rail system should be electrified by 2050 to achieve decarbonisation targets - and it wants to start work as soon as possible. An early glimpse of NR's interim Traction Decarbonisation Strategy shown to the Rail Industry Association on May 21 says electrification should double from the current 40% of the network, requiring around 11,000 single-track kilometres (STKs) of further electrification over the next 30 years. NR also believes Control Period 7 (starting in 2024) will be too late and work needs to begin sooner to ensure the necessary upgrades can be delivered. Long-distance passenger routes and areas with heavy freight traffic will be the priority, including those serving container ports at Felixstowe and Southampton and their inland terminals, South Wales and lines…
