For the railroad industry, it’s how to move big stuff long distances. The situation is well explained on pages 28-33 with Robert Scott’s story about moving 737 fuselages from their manufacturing location in Kansas to their final assembly point in Washington state. That’s a big shipment, and that’s a long way to carry it. It’s impressive! I think about that first trip on the tracks for a new airplane every time I board a plane that belongs to Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest operator of 737s with more than 750 in its fleet. Letter AN UNLIKELY LOCATION The June issue’s cover photo of Norfolk Southern’s Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit, ES44AC No. 8102, reminded me of another Tuscan Red, yellow-pinstriped diesel I saw in Moradabad, India, in January 1994. Indian Railways Class WDS6 No. 36088, a broad gauge locomotive, was built in 1986 by Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi, India. ROBERT LAUBY, the top career safety officer at the Federal Railroad Administration, retired April 13 as associate administrator for railroad safety. Lauby joined FRA in 2005 as a senior systems safety engineer after leading the National Transportation Safety Board’s railroad accident investigation program for a decade. His career included stints in locomotive maintenance at Conrail; at a railroad equipment company, Knorr Brake; and as a consultant. hoosier state’s last hurrah

IN THE END, it didn’t matter to state lawmakers that central Indiana communities, fighting to preserve daily train service, have for years contributed more than $350,0000 of operating support to the Hoosier State. The train made its last runs June 30 after Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb declined to include a $3-million annual grant in his $33-billion, two-year state budget [see “Hoosier State Threatened—Again,” “Passenger,” April 2019]. This leaves only the triweekly Cardinal to serve the Chicago-Indianapolis route. Amtrak immediately added more direct Thruway bus options between Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Chicago. Those bypass Crawfordsville, Rensselaer, and Dyer, Ind., now served only by the Cardinal on Monday northbound, Tuesday southbound, and Thursdays and Saturdays in both directions.
