cracking the code of how to win

When you’ve cracked it, you’ve cracked it. After last weekend, Lewis Hamilton is the new Formula 1 wins record holder, Scott Dixon is a six-time IndyCar champion and four-time British Touring Car title winner Colin Turkington is back atop the 2020 points race. Each of those drivers has established a special relationship with their team over a long period of time, and are still reaping the rewards. All three could break the championship title records in their respective disciplines soon. Hamilton’s motivation to dig deep and overturn the advantage Valtteri Bottas appeared to have over him during F1’s first grand prix at the Algarve Circuit is remarkable given how successful he has already been – reminiscent of Michael Schumacher. As Alex Kalinauckas shows in our report on page 18, the Portuguese track…

schumacher tipped for all-new haas f1 line-up

FORMULA 1 Formula 2 championship leader Mick Schumacher has been tipped to claim a Formula 1 seat with Haas in 2021 after the team announced last week a complete change of driver line-up for next year. Current Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean both confirmed last Thursday that they will be leaving the team at the end of the season, and could be replaced by an all-rookie pairing. Schumacher, a protege of Haas engine supplier Ferrari, is widely expected to get one of the seats. The son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher leads the F2 standings with four races remaining, and already has a superlicence required to race in F1. Schumacher had looked on course to join Alfa Romeo for 2021, and was set to feature in practice for the Eifel…

fia relaxes superlicence points ruling

FORMULA 1 The FIA has introduced a new rule allowing it to grant a superlicence to race in Formula 1, even if a driver has just three quarters of the points required to qualify for one. Since 2016, the FIA has granted a superlicence to drivers who accrue 40 points through a weighted system depending on their success in other categories. But the governing body confirmed earlier this year that it was planning to review the system in light of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which shortened a number of seasons and compromised a number of drivers’ campaigns. In the latest update to the FIA’s International Sporting Code, drivers can now be granted a superlicence so long as they have scored 30 points in the championships, and are “judged at the sole…

brexit blamed for no uk endurance fixtures in 2021

GT WORLD CHALLENGE EUROPE Britain has been left without an international endurance race in 2021, and Brexit is to blame. The traditional Silverstone GT World Challenge Europe round in May has disappeared from the calendar as a result of concerns over the effects of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. The fixture organised by the Stephane Ratel Organisation has gone the same way as Silverstone’s round of the World Endurance Championship. The WEC race fell off the calendar this year as a result of a COVID-related reshuffle, like the GTWCE Endurance Cup event scheduled for May, and is not part of the scaled-back series in 2021. Until the exceptional circumstances of this year, Silverstone has hosted at least one major international enduro every season since 1995. That run included rounds of multiple…

hoggard shines on f1 prize test

FORMULA 1 Johnathan Hoggard impressed on his Formula 1 test with Red Bull at Silverstone last week, part of his prize for winning the 2019 Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award. The 19-year-old drove one of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s RB8s, the design that took both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2012. It was a return for Hoggard to the Grand Prix layout, a year after his performances in MSV Formula 2, Ligier LMP3 and Aston Martin GT3 machinery won him the Award. After an installation lap on wet tyres, Red Bull waited for the weather to improve so that Hoggard could have three runs in the dry on new slick rubber with the 750-800bhp V8 machine. He improved on each run and ended up with an…

rosberg joins hamilton in team owner battle

EXTREME E Nico Rosberg has followed in the footsteps of fellow Mercedes-mounted Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton by creating his own Extreme E squad. Rosberg Xtreme Racing is the ninth entry set to contest the all-electric off-road SUV racing championship, which launches in spring next year, and will act as a development of Team Rosberg. Established by Rosberg’s 1982 F1 championship-winning father Keke, Team Rosberg runs Audi RS5 drivers Rene Rast and Jamie Green in the DTM. But it faces an uncertain future with the manufacturer poised to exit the series at the end of the current campaign. Since departing F1 as the reigning champion, Rosberg has been active in the field of sustainability and is an investor and stakeholder in Formula E, co-founded by XE chief executive Alejandro Agag. Rosberg said: “The…
