hamlin, west virginia bares its treasures

A recent exciting addition to my collection of West Virginia nationals takes us this month to a county we visited together back in July of 2019, when we looked at Griffithsville, W. Va., and its long-abandoned Oil Field National Bank. Only two towns in that county had national banks and the other one was quite rare and seemingly never available. However, I am pleased to take you this month to Hamlin, W. Va., the seat of Lincoln County. Lincoln County, W. Va., is a sparsely populated subdivision in the far southwestern part of the state. It was created by an act of the West Virginia Legislature on Feb. 23, 1867, from parts of Boone, Cabell, Kanawha and Putnam counties. The county was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. In 1869,…

note of the month

A multitude of notes exist as commemoratives for the year, 2000. One of the celebrating countries was the Republic of the Fiji Islands, usually referred to simply as “Fiji.” There were actually two Fiji notes made for this event, a 2-dollar and this 2000-dollar gem measuring 221 x 110mm. A large portrait of Sir Kamisese Mara is featured at right while other design components include a parrot at lower left and arms at upper right. The back design shows the Earth, a rising sun, and an island map and shells. The watermark is a Fijian head and the printer was TDLR. Sir Mara is considered one of Fiji’s most prominent statesmen. Born in 1920, he was groomed early on as a potential political leader. He eventually became Prime Minister in 1990, and…

heritage online weekly world bank note auction

The Jan. 7 Heritage World Currency auction concluded with notes that rose above estimate, some that fell below and others that were just shy of it. A few standing out to me that surpassed their estimates are lot #86012, lot #86064 and lot #86134. The first, lot #86012 was a Bulgaria National Bank note (P-12c) ND 1907, 500 Leva Zlato. The note has the arms located at the top center and the signatures of Chakalov and Venkov. Estimated at $200-$250, the note sold after 14 bids for $750. A second strong mover was lot #86064. The Finlands Bank note (P-110b) 1975 500 Markkaa is graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. The fabulous multicolor note features Urho Kaleva Kekkonen at left. The back of the note depicts nine small shields and the coat-of-arms.…

paper money market

Middle of the Road Notes I thought I would focus on middle of the road notes this month. Not everybody has a big budget to draw on. Fractionals in particular seem like great buys currently. Except for Gems, all other conditions are bargains. A lot of lightly circulated issues are bargains even in MS-63. Fractional collectors are very fussy but if you’re willing to live with a fold or two you can put together a really attractive type set. Spinner and Justice notes are good choices. Some are autographed and others, if they have nice margins, just look nice in Extra Fine or better. There are five issues, and only the Third issue has an assortment of rare notes. Type sets for the First, Second, Fourth and Fifth issues are not…
