“I love the British countryside, its endless variety, its moods, its people and, most of all, its wildlife. It gives me a fundamental joy that has carried me through all sorts of crises. RENEW Wind turbines are an increasingly common sight on our hills and coasts, tapping the power of the wind to produce electricity. These on the gentle hills of East Renfrewshire, south of Glasgow, tower over a popular site for walkers. Supporters claim that these tall, rotating structures are more beautiful than traditional pylons; opponents dismiss them as eyesores. Get to grips with some of the key terms surrounding climate change and environmental sustainability. CLIMATE CHANGE Changes in global climate, including wind patterns, rainfall and the increase in Earth’s temperature, caused by the rise of CO2. EMISSIONS The release of gases – namely CO2 – that cause global warming, from coal-fired power stations and car fumes for example. RENEWABLES (ENERGY) Energy derived from natural sources, such as wind, sunlight and water. GREENHOUSE EFFECT The slow, steady rise in temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere, caused by an increase of gases in the air that trap the sun’s heat. CARBON FOOTPRINT A measure of the amount of CO2 produced by the activities of a person or company. CARBON OFFSET A way for a person or company to reduce the level of CO2 they are responsible for by paying money to a company that…
