venue reopening programs

Cairns Performing Arts Centre and Tanks Arts Centre were two of six state-wide venues who participated in the Queensland Government’s Venue Pilot Program, funded through Arts Queensland, to pilot re-openings and deliver programming under COVID-19 restrictions. Cairns has been included in an Australian Research Council-funded research project, Australian cultural and creative activity: A population and hotspot analysis. The Creative Hotspots study is being undertaken by the Queensland University of Technology and the University of Newcastle, in partnership with five state government cultural funding agencies (Qld, NSW, Vic, SA and WA). Four ‘creative hotspots’ have been identified in each state including Cairns in Queensland. DR JAN CATTONI Dr Jan Cattoni’s professional career spans a number of disciplines including filmmaker, academic and paediatric intensive care nurse. Jan has woven these disciplines into a kind of hybrid career in ethical filmmaking, often working with vulnerable individuals and marginalised communities. Jan’s broadcast credits are as a writer director of short drama, documentary and factual series for ABC, SBS and RTE (Ireland). JAS SHENNAN Jas Shennan trained in fine art and stage design. After graduating from the London Film School, Jas worked at the BBC on documentaries and dramas, before emigrating to Australia. regional arts development fund (radf)

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is delivered locally in partnership with the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Cairns Regional Council. RADF promotes the role and value of arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of diverse and inclusive communities and strong regions through 59 local councils across the state. As the fund is flexible, the role of Cultural Services is to tailor the RADF program to suit the needs of our community. Cairns Regional Council offers out-of-round grants and two major funding rounds each year. Council’s RADF Committee provides recommendations and contributes to the ongoing implementation of the program. cairns projects share in arts funding

Stories of migration, child slavery and multiculturalism from the Cairns community will be brought to life via music, theatre, screen and literature in projects funded by the Cairns Regional Arts Development Fund Program. For the first time, Cairns Regional Council has awarded a major ‘City of the Arts Hero Project’ grant of $25,000 in 2020, which went to JUTE Theatre Company for a proposal to celebrate the Cairns region’s Italian legacy in a theatre and music project called La Bella Figura. This large-scale new theatrical work will be developed in consultation with the Cairns Italian community and involves music, photography, and a creative team made up of some of the most highly respected professionals in our region.
