Follow that up with the VanGogh Museum, which contains the world’s largest collection of the artist’s pieces, and the Anne Frank House, where you will be moved by the younggirl’s belongings, including her original red-checked diary. low country highs

ALKMAAR is a city filled with pretty canals and crisscrossing streets. Wander through them on your way to the public market to sample some of the region’s famous cheeses. Here, men wearing traditional straw hats carry loads of cheese adorned with makers’ logos to have them weighed the oldfashioned way. Watch pairs of men carefully balance the orange rounds on special trays as they move toward the scales. The whole scene is explained in several languages by an animator, who details the history of this tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. See the sails of windmills slowly turning in the charming village of ZAANSE SCHANS in North Holland. Visit the area’s numerous artisanal shops (don’t forget tograb a few chocolate windmills to take home) and, before you leave, climb…
