ban on diesels

▶ What do you think of the decision to ban all private diesel vehicles from entering a controlled zone in Bristol city centre from March 2021? Even if you’ve just changed up from an older diesel to the latest Euro 6 model, these too are going to be banned. The proposed diesel ban will operate between 7am to 3pm every day of the week. Not familiar with the area, take a wrong turning in your diesel-powered motor into the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) and you will be automatically captured on camera. A Penalty Charge Notice will then arrive on your doormat. While I understand that diesel engines produce more nitrogen dioxide (NO2) than petrol units – and most diesel exhausts do stink when sat idling, I can see this ban causing a bit…

driving licence renewal

▶ I’ve had to renew my driving licence this month. As a motorist, you are required to renew it every 10 years, and it can be done online. Make sure, though, that you visit the DVLA’s official webpage, not another website offering to do this service for you. Visit here: www.gov.uk/ renew-driving-licence If you’ve had to renew your licence before, you will know that there is quite a lot of inputting to do – including adding your passport number, your National Insurance number and, of course, driving licence number. As for adding a new photo to your refreshed driving licence – don’t worry, the DVLA will grab the one that is current on your passport and use that. Once you’ve typed in the relevant details and cross-checks have been made, the final bit…

repairing direct shift gearbox mechatronics

Until relatively recently, the ‘traditional’ epicyclical-geared automatic gearbox with torque converter was hampered by its inefficiency, allowing it to fall increasingly out-of-step with the quest to decrease CO2 emissions that became linked with vehicle taxation policy from the early 2000s. The result saw automated manual gearboxes being popularised. The types discussed in these pages are the twin-clutch automated manual designs and, specifically, those fitted to Volkswagen Group models, which are the most common types in the marketplace. New tech from old Continuing development of the technologies established by the earlier AutoServe, Hot-Shift and Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK, or ‘double clutch’) gearboxes, the Volkswagen Group introduced its DQ250 6-speed DSG initially to markets outside Germany on its Audi TT 3.2-litre V6 model. This transmission is referred to as a ‘wet clutch’ system, because its…

diy removal

▶ DIY dismantling of the DSG7 Mechatronics is extremely risky and dangerous. A capable DIYer can save garage labour costs, by separating the Mechatronics from the gearbox with the aid of several special tools. Should you perform this task at home, take the usual safety precautions. Place the gear lever in its ‘Park’ (P) position. Ensure that the vehicle’s weight is supported by axle stands, the rear wheels are chocked, the parking-brake applied and that you are working on a level surface. If your diagnostic equipment is advanced enough, verify that no gears are selected, which is necessary to remove the Mechatronics successfully. You can do this via VAG-com Diagnostic System (VCDS) under the Basic Settings Groups 61 and 62, or use the VAS diagnostic software. The facilities of these systems…

common dsg7 mechatronics problems

▶ In these pages, we’re focussing on the front-wheel-drive (transverse) iterations of the DSG7, part number beginning ‘0AM’. Although similar, the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive (longitudinal) versions, such as the Audi ‘S tronic’, are not included. The main issue that afflicts the ECU is a shorted electrical connection, caused by the gearbox oil. The synthetic ATF, used originally within the gearbox, contains sulphur which penetrates the Mechatronics body and enters the electronics, causing short circuits (as evident in step 39). The result is a variety of driving issues, including shuddering, loss of drive and a loss of engine power. Volkswagen UK initiated a number of recalls, so ensure that your car is not affected by them. The main cure is to replace the PCB, loaded with upgraded software. The internal pump can also…
