I’m sure all of us heard the news from the government that the 2040 deadline to move all newly-manufactured cars to fully-electric propulsion will now happen in 2035. The big change from previously-released information is that hybrid vehicles will no longer be made either. We all thought that petrol/diesel power would continue to made after 2040 in the form of hybrids or plug-in hybrids – this news now confirms that the internal combustion engine (ICE) will be no more! Many of us bought the diesel engine because of road tax incentives and the quoted mpg figures. The manufacturers have done a great job in cleaning them up over the past 20 years. Yet they’re to blame for city pollution and need to go. Don’t worry, though, we can keep running our ICE…

stop-start

When new car Vehicle Excise Duty rates were aligned with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, car manufacturers found themselves in a race to the bottom. With the carrot of low, or zero, road tax dangling in front of the typical showroom punter, achieving the lowest CO2 rating in the now-defunct, laboratory-set, Whole Vehicle Type Approval tests became the priority for vehicle engineers. As an element of the old assessments dictated a set period of engine idling, emissions savings resulted from stalling the engine and putting it on ‘stand-by’, poised for a prompt restart. Stop-Start carries-out this function automatically and was introduced as a standard feature on many mainstream models a little over a decade ago. Early vehicles featured Stop-Start technology alone. The technology was refined on later models to provide a degree of…

stop-start dmfs

Like Stop-Start technology, the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) has the advantage of reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 10%, while also aiding smoothness, especially in low-RPM conditions. Its primary purpose is to protect the drivetrain and aid passenger comfort, by absorbing torsional vibrations from the engine. DMFs achieve this by being constructed in two halves. The primary mass is connected to the engine; the secondary mass, to the gearbox. Therefore, the two masses can rotate independently, although most designs limit this to a 100° difference. They are connected by a centre bearing (or bush), with damping media contained within the grease-filled centre. Practical information on assessing wear and replacing DMFs is detailed in our July 2018 back-issue. The Stop-Start difference A typical DMF can contain over 100 precision-made parts, the…

smmt boss hits back at government goalpost-moving

www.caarparts.co.uk Following the government announcement to bring forward its ban on selling new petrol and diesel vehicles, the plans have been met with disappointment from the chief executive of The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the trade association responsible for supporting and promoting the UK automotive industry. “It’s extremely concerning that government has seemingly moved the goalposts for consumers and industry on such a critical issue,” explained Mike Hawes, SMMT chief exec. “Manufacturers are fully invested in a zero emissions future, with some 60 plug-in models now on the market and 34 more coming in 2020. “However, with current demand for this still expensive technology still just a fraction of sales, it’s clear that accelerating an already very challenging ambition will take more than industry investment. This is about market transformation, yet…
