baubles and blooms

Meet the designer Lesley Teare Lesley designs for many of the best stitching magazines, as well as for cross stitch books If your Christmas wreath has seen better days and is looking a bit tired this year, why not replace it with my stitched design? It’s bright and beautiful, and it’ll last for many years if you look after it! I’ve decorated the garland with bold red poinsettias, roses, shiny baubles and berries, then finished it off with a big bow at the top. I think you’ll enjoy this project, as there are so many wonderful colours in it, as well as metallic thread and gold beads. The festive greeting makes this piece perfect for hanging in a hallway to welcome guests at Christmas time. Or you can display it on the door…

have your say

Stash busting I have lots of small pieces of aida and evenweave left over from larger projects. I find attaching four strips of waste material, such as old curtain lining, all around keeps the edges from fraying but also enables the piece to be kept tight in an embroidery hoop. You can stitch near to the edge and it’s ideal for stitching cards, bookmarks and needle cases, like the one in this picture, if you enjoy stitching with a hoop. I love your magazine! Zena Wainwright, Lancashire Sarah: What a great idea, Zena! It’s an ideal way to use up bits in your stash and make small cards and gifts for your loved ones, using a trusted stitching method. Message of hope I am a tour guide at our state capital building. As my supervisor’s…

pure grace

Meet the designer Maria Diaz Maria studied fine art before becoming a designer for DMC, and later a freelancer designer for various stitching magazines including Cross Stitch Gold Polar bears are such amazing creatures. Imposing and strong on land, and graceful swimmers in the water, they make a fine subject for cross stitch. I was in my element designing this piece for you, as I’m a huge fan of wildlife pictures. As much as I would have enjoyed a research trip to the Arctic, it just wasn’t possible! So I created this design by referring to photographs of polar bears in books and online. The design is pretty straightforward – it’s worked mostly in whole cross stitch, while the background is quick to recreate in half cross stitch. The backstitch is also relatively…

maria diaz’s designer secrets

Washed away The technique I use to clean my stitching is to wash it in lukewarm water mixed with detergent. I leave it to soak for several minutes, then swish it around gently. Next, I rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water until the water runs clear, then give it a final rinse in cold water. Tricky shading I always find shading difficult when working with a limited colour palette. It was hard to achieve the right balance with the different shades of white in this project, but I got there in the end! Sometimes, the harder the process, the greater the satisfaction when you finish.…

magical moments

Meet the designer Emma Congdon Emma is a London-based graphic designer with a passion for typography. Her designs are seen on packaging and cards, as well as in cross stitch The very mention of these song lyrics puts me in a festive mood. They’re from popular Christmas song, It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year , written in 1963 by Edward Pola and George Wyle. The version we all know and love is that performed by Andy Williams for his first Christmas album, and I’m sure you too will be singing it to yourself as you stitch your way through this design. I’ve worked it in a style reminiscent of vintage American advertising posters. This is a piece you’ll love to unpack and hang in a prominent place each December. It’s guaranteed…
