‘your home is a life’

Wise words indeed, as uttered by Ilse Crawford, who founded this magazine back in 1989. To mark our 30th anniversary, we both met last month to discuss our thoughts on ELLE Decoration, how the brand and the world have changed since the end of the 1980s and how her experience of editing has shaped her approach to design. It was a fascinating couple of hours, and her intelligent and considered approach to the way we live was so inspiring. Our discussion can be found in full on page 86. I was musing on Crawford’s words as we compiled this month’s annual exploration of the worlds of interior design and architecture. So much of what she has achieved – this magazine, her products, the interiors and buildings she has worked on –…

MATERIAL GAINS Think Ercol and the brand’s heritage with woodcraft, especially steam-bent timber, will come to mind. For its latest collections, though, the British furniture producer is making its first foray into metal. The ‘Verso’ three-piece cabinet range includes brass backplates behind its doors, giving each item a subtle metallic flash. Meanwhile, the ‘Ore’ tables have elegant sand-cast iron bases anchoring their crafted walnut tops. ‘Verso’ large sideboard, £2,395; ‘Ore’ side and coffee tables in walnut, from £349; ‘Marino’ chair, from £1,340 (ercol.com). CRAFT with aCONSCIENCE Kam Ce Kam is a new furniture and accessories brand that fuses India’s craft heritage with contemporary design. Founder Jehanara Knowles grew up between New Delhi and London, fostering a passion for India’s incredible manufacturing industry and an eye for design informed by both countries. ‘We wanted…

genevieve bennett x heal’s

Tell us about your background… My family had a silk business and I grew up surrounded by fabric at home – there were always samples everywhere! Then I studied weaving and embroidery at Glasgow School of Art followed by Mixed Media at the Royal College of Art, where I developed a love of pattern, colour and technique. How would you describe your work? It references the tradition of decorative arts but is enabled by a mixture of sophisticated technology and traditional craft. I am passionate about combining beautiful natural materials, unique pattern and innovative techniques to create precious and long-lasting products. My aim is to create pieces that improve with age, are timelessly elegant and thoroughly contemporary. Your ‘Deco Knot’ collection was inspired by Samurai knots – that’s an unexpected source of…

ADDING UP Annick L Petersen’s latest design is actually six in one. The ‘505’ vase is made up of five stackable components that can be combined or used individually. Available in black and white, the vase is 3D printed from Petersen’s north London studio and uses recycled plastic made from household and commercial waste. £390, Alp Design (alp-design.co.uk). WASTE NOT… GoodWaste was founded by Royal College of Arts graduates Ambra Dentella, Ewan Alston and Rafael Muldal el Baz. The brand sources waste materials including marble, steel and Corian from London’s industrial sites (in this case Park Royal in Harlesden) and transforms it into unique pieces of furniture and homeware. They see their work as a ‘new model of manufacturing’, disposing of unwanted materials and creating quality goods with longevity. From £120, Selfridges (selfridges.co.uk). WORTH…
