I’m writing this month’s letter from the German city of Cologne, in the middle of winter, looking out at the Rhine as it runs through the city’s heart. It’s the same shade of sludge as the stormy sky it reflects. If this sounds rather bleak, don’t worry, I’m actually in a fairly buoyant frame of mind. Playing to the GALLERY Is it sculpture? Is it furniture? In Kelly Wearstler’s world, it can be both. I’ve always been creative, with parents who were very interested in art, architecture and furniture design. What was the starting point for the ‘Kuru’ collection (above)? Iittala briefed us to create a series of home displays that were both sculptural and functional. Kuru means ‘gorge’ – the shape is the result of a sculpting process where matter is removed by rotating geometric shapes around cylindrical volumes. How do you envisage these vessels being used? The collection as a whole is meant to be used as a place where you can put objects that you don’t want to stow away in a drawer, but that you also don’t want to use as a decorative item. DANIEL FREYNE, Craft Scotland The Scottish artist trained as a blacksmith and forges age-old techniques with contemporary sensibilities. How do you describe your work? An homage to the foundations of blacksmithing, but with a distinct breakaway from the romanticised notion of what a smith is and is not. Where do you find inspiration?
