‘We wanted this issue to be an ASSAULT on the SENSES, but in a good way, of course’ I’m fascinated by the work and world of Danish textile designer Margrethe Odgaard. She has collaborated with most of the major Scandinavian brands: Muuto, Hay, Kvadrat, Montana; and has featured on these pages many times. As well as her proficiency with materials and fabrics, she is also described as a colour alchemist, creating contemporary shades and palettes for companies looking to add coherence to their product ranges. LIGHT as Aero If Italian brand Living Divani has one defining hallmark, it’s the sense of lightness its designs exude, as if they could float away at any moment. The latest additions to its Aero storage range by Shibuleru continue this aesthetic and include the ‘Aero B’ bar cabinet (pictured), which has discreet sliding shutter doors and superslim legs. This spring, another of the barriers between indoor and outdoor living is being removed. With several well-known design icons reimagined for all weathers, and a wealth of innovative new ranges on the way from high-end brands that previously declined to even set foot in the garden, it’s clear that luxury and excellent modern craftsmanship are having a moment in the sun. Equally at home by the pool or on the patio as they are inside, these new outdoor furniture collections incorporate hi-tech materials such as carbon fibre and finely woven polypropylene yarns to accurately reproduce the comfort of their indoor-only counterparts, but with the added extra benefit of increased durability. What do you get if you cross art with technology? It’s not a trick question, the answer is Artek–literally. A portmanteau of the words art and technology, it couldn’t be a better moniker for the Finnish company founded in 1935 by four young visionaries: architects Alvar and Aino Aalto, art collector and artist Maire Gullichsen and critic and writer Nils-Gustav Hahl. Influenced by the radical teachings of the Bauhaus, which declared that art, design and technology should work holistically rather than be treated as separate disciplines, the quartet had grand ambitions that stretched far beyond the purely commercial (and far beyond Finland for that matter). catchpole & rye

‘It was love at first sight,’ says Tony O’Donnell, founder and managing director of Kent-based company Catchpole & Rye. He’s referring to the clawfoot bathtub that was sitting in the kitchen of the Victorian cottage he bought in 1990, which eventually led to the creation of his bathroom brand. Unable to find someone to restore the tub, O’Donnell embarked on the job himself and developed quite a passion for antique cast iron pieces in the process. ‘Catchpole & Rye was an accident, really. It grew from a reclamation business.
