My younger daughter, Ellery, came home from school recently with an invitation to a kindergarten class potluck. Ordinarily this would be great news—cooking is one of the few ways I can make myself useful at my kids’ school. But this wasn’t just any potluck. It was an “international luncheon,” and the teachers wanted every family to bring a dish that represented their heritage.
