Earlier this month, 28 chaps (with handicaps ranging from 2 to 24) from the UK and USA played in our own Ryder Cup. This year, the Brits (and one Irishman) retained the McBurnie Cup (named after an original team member who has sadly passed away). Started in 1991, when six of us journeyed across to New York to play six New Yorkers (and lost), the group has grown larger. We have been playing for the bragging rights for 28 years, and have had the privilege of playing some of the best courses in the UK, Ireland and USA. Mobile madness I would like to respond to the letter by Paul Thomas in the October issue. First of all he is of the opinion that my original letter [September issue] was written by an older, out of touch golfer. I cannot see how he has arrived at this assumption as I have read the original letter again and no age is mentioned at any point. Every golfer has an equal right to an opinion whatever their age, and it should be judged on its merits. I don’t go to play the game I enjoy to listen to someone on their mobile phone. If, for example, you play football, tennis or cricket, when was the last time you saw a player get out a mobile phone in the middle of a match?…

Having missed the cut at Wentworth, the Englishman fell to 462nd in the world – that joyful Sunday afternoon in Augusta a distant memory as he contemplated his lowest ranking since January 2009.
