trust your gut

‘Clearly instinct is another muscle I need to be flexing’ One of the many benefits, I think, of getting older is the ability to discover a way of living that works best for you. It’s only through life experience that we can come to recognise what truly makes us feel good and what doesn’t, what contributes to our overall happiness and what diminishes us. This month, I loved reading about the wisdom that illustrious foodie Julie Goodwin has gained over the years, enabling her to develop her own personal approach to wellbeing. She celebrates good food and its power to bring people together, she loves walking in nature around her Central Coast home, and she and her husband Mick practise gratitude on a daily basis. NATURAL SOLUTIONS I was fascinated by your recent article on infrared therapy, and also the feature on using cold water to boost the immune system. I have yet to try either of these myself, although I have heard of athletes alternating hot and cold treatments to ease sports injuries. I think looking to simple methods like using heat or cold to improve health really ties in to the whole wellness trend around looking to things that are more natural and traditional, rather than reaching for tablets and other synthetic medicines. Without sounding too hippy dippy, I love the idea that the natural world has a lot more health answers than we think! – Mary A NEW FAVE Gratefulness comes from many sources. One of them, for me, was discovering your magazine. I have never…

know your personality and how to embrace it

Introvert or extrovert? Don’t jump to conclusions; it’s a lot more complicated than being ‘shy’ or ‘loud’. If you’re outgoing, talkative and think giving a presentation is a piece of cake, you might assume you’re an extrovert. But that’s not always so. You might still thrive on quality ‘me time’ – an introvert characteristic – whereas extroverts rarely will. A better guide is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which lists 16 personality types. Each of us has a unique set of four equally valuable characteristics. It’s useful to know which set of four correspond to you because if, say, you’re in a career rut, a personality test will help you identify your strengths and reveal the best work environment for you. Those who are ENTJ – Extroverted (E), Intuitive (N), Thinking…

DRINK LESS, LOOK BETTER On average, Australian women spend $3600 a year on beauty products to fight the signs of ageing – but there’s one lifestyle change we could make that could really help. Binge drinking is on the rise – with more women getting into it than ever before – but excessive drinking accelerates the ageing process, and that includes your skin. Think premature wrinkles, loss of collagen, elasticity, redness, dehydration and puffiness. Stick to the recommended no more than two standard drinks a day with alcohol-free days each week and save your looks – and your money. GENE GENIE Research shows 45 per cent of Australians will experience a mental health issue during our lifetimes and one in five of us find medication either doesn’t work or causes extreme side effects.…
