DOUBLE TIME I’ve been a subscriber for many years and absolutely love your magazine. When I feel a bit frumpy and lazy, I read your magazine and it brightens me up and motivates me to get off my butt and do something worthwhile. Pet project When it comes to preventing childhood allergies, the more pets the better. A study in the journal PLOS One followed almost 1300 children, and split them into two groups. Most families completed questionnaires on pet ownership and the incidence of allergies in their kids, while the parents of 249 children were interviewed about pet ownership when their children were six to 12 months. Those children then had clinical evaluations at 18 months, three years and eight to nine years. In both groups, reports of allergies declined with the number of pets – one third of the children in families with no pets reported allergies and associated symptoms, compared to no reports of allergies among families with five or more cats or dogs.
