New Year, New You, perhaps? But if you think your NY health resolutions are doomed to failure (yet again), it’s time to try something a little different. In REVAMP YOUR LIFE, page 26, we take a fresh approach to five common health-based NY resolutions – success guaranteed! Clinical trials help to save lives – but how do they really work? Three women share their experiences, both good and bad, in “WHY I TOOK PART IN A MEDICAL TRIAL”, page 32. Don’t miss it! My favourite story this month is QUOTES TO INSPIRE, page 54, where we look at famous sayings (“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”) to see why they strike such a chord. And if you are having a staycation this festive…

say it!

There is so much I love about Good Health but one thing that always shines through is that, no matter how serious the topic of your stories, I know I’ll always find positive, manageable strategies that can make a very real difference. All I have to do is make the time to sit down and read. Many thanks for a fabulous November issue! Judith, via email I’ve just started using natural cosmetics, but as a beauty novice I wasn’t sure which brands delivered the best results. Your December natural beauty special, 'All Natural, Radiant You!’ pointed me in the right direction. Thank you for the helpful information. Hilary, via email I’m really enjoying your alternative stories lately. My favourite one in the December issue was 'Daily Rituals Of Natural Health Experts’– I’d never heard…

My partner Shaun (Hampson) and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old son River, and we also have two fur babies, a cat and a dog. We have a great family unit – we have so much fun together – and River is the centre of that joy. We’ve thought about giving him a sibling and that would be beautiful, but if we don’t end up having another child we’ll be so thrilled with our boy. It’s totally changed me. It puts a lot of things into perspective. Your child’s wellbeing is always at the forefront of your mind. It’s amazing – I look back at before I had River and realise there were so many things I worried about that weren’t important. Shaun and I have been together for six years and we have been…

listen to your heart

An irregular heartbeat can be a symptom of atrial fibrillation, a heart irregularity that means you’re five times more likely to have a stroke. Gently press your index and middle fingers into your neck, next to your windpipe, and tap your foot along to your pulse. If it regularly falls out of rhythm, talk to your GP. If your resting heart rate (RHR) is consistently above 76, you’re 26 per cent more likely to have a heart attack. RHR is a measure of physical fitness, and the best time to measure it is just before you get out of bed in the morning. The more you practise taking your pulse, the more accurate you’ll become at counting your heart’s beats, and that can make you feel more positive about your body, say…

Do you ever wonder whether you’re working hard enough at the gym? Here, Ben Lucas from Flow Athletic gym tells how to determine whether you’re in the right zone. TALK TEST. If you can talk comfortably while exercising you’re likely to be working at a low-to-moderate intensity. It should be very difficult to speak when working out at a vigorous level. HEART RATE. First, determine your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. Next, measure your heart rate after 15 minutes of exercise. During a moderate workout your heart rate will be 60-70 per cent of your max HR. Vigorous activity should reach 70-80 per cent. THE RATE OF PERCEIVED EXERTION. This measures how hard you feel you’re pushing yourself and allows you to tune in to your body. People tend…
