welcome to the issue

I’M SURE I wasn’t the only one glued to the documentary where Meghan and Harry opened up about how difficult they’re finding life. It felt – as the couple have long tried to position themselves – both refreshingly modern and a touch revolutionary, too. But while they won praise for talking candidly about their mental health, the explosive nature of the interview sparked a week of speculation over what had caused the rift between two brothers we’ve watched grow up together – and whether the royal couple could walk away from it all. On page 15, we asked BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond for his take… @hattie_brett / feedback@graziamagazine.co.uk…

DON’T BANK ON IT The pitfalls of using the bank of Mum and Dad (21 Oct) made me so angry. My husband and I will be repaying every penny we’ve been lent by our parents to help buy us a property and wouldn’t hesitate to remortgage if they needed their investment back quickly. I find Rosemary’s comment of ‘We’re thinking of remortgaging our home when we should be saving to have a baby’ so selfish. Why do your needs come before your (very generous) parents’? Danielle Evan-Cook HAPPY WITH HELP Wow, ‘Don’t judge me for my happy pills’ (21 Oct) is everything I feel and more. While I think things are moving forward with encouraging people to talk about their mental health, there is still a huge stigma with people not understanding the…

knowledge is power

I was most interested in ‘I’m glad I was diagnosed with ADHD’ (28 Oct). I’m a teacher and have been on courses to help with behavioural problems in class, including ADHD. Sadly, girls sometimes get overlooked because they’re more likely to have inattentive ADHD, which doesn’t have the visible behaviour that hyperactive/impulsive ADHD usually does. Isabelle opened my eyes to the problems adults have with ADHD. It cannot be easy, but diagnosis and treatment greatly improves the quality of their lives.…

People traffickers must be brought to justice “News that 39 bodies – of 31 men and eight women – had been found in the back of a lorry in Essex last week left the country shocked and deeply saddened. They are believed to be Chinese nationals who had been trafficked in a refrigerated container. According to the National Crime Agency, the number of migrants being smuggled into the UK in containers and lorries has risen in the last year. The desperation of these people doesn’t bear thinking about. It’s a sobering reminder of the human suffering behind the figures – and how traffickers must be stopped and brought to justice so this can never happen again.”…

love across the political divide: what other kind is there?

A FRIEND – early thirties and single – is listing the merits of a man she works with, on whom she has a crush. ‘He’s amazing! Beard, smart, real social conscience,’ she says. Real what? I say. ‘Social conscience!’ she repeats. And that’s hot because…? ‘Because it is,’ she says, like I’ve questioned the desirability of a beautiful face, a GSOH. Me? I can imagine nothing less sexy than a man whose social conscience rates third in his list of admirable qualities, but I don’t share this with her because she seems so enamoured, because I have no desire to rain on a gal’s newly-minted reason to plan every day’s work outfit like the rest of her life depends upon it, and because there is no greater thrill than sharing office space with a man you…
