a very british summer!

DURING the past four months, it seems that we have relived every inch of the pioneering days of the heritage railway movement, if not the whole 70 years, at lightning speed. At the start of the year, who in the sector would have heard of Covid-19, furlough, social distancing and so on? Yet here we are into the height of the summer season, and battling in a near-World War Three scenario, our heritage lines have yet again shown the very best that our country has to proudly offer. watercress line takes somerset & dorset 7f on loan

SOMERSET & Dorset Joint Railway 7F 2-8-0 No. 53808 is to move to the Mid-Hants Railway on loan for two years. Owner the Washford-based Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust (SDRT) and the West Somerset Railway plc (WSR) have reached agreement for the move. The agreement sees the locomotive’s current operating agreement with WSR plc being suspended for the remaining period of its boiler certificate, which is due to end in autumn 2022. At present, the West Somerset Railway is not running trains due to a major track upgrade in process, and suspension of the agreement will allow the locomotive, one of two survivors of the class, to be hired externally during this period to earn additional hire fees towards its next major overhaul. anniversary lines celebrate as steam returns for summer

THE easing of the Covid-19 lockdown has seen heritage railways big and small restart services – and three in particular have special reason to celebrate. The world’s first two standard gauge heritage lines – the Middleton and Bluebell railways – both cancelled their 60th anniversary galas because of the Government restrictions. The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR) also postponed its event marking half a century since filming of one of the most popular family films of all time – The Railway Children – began on the line. bratton fleming station: purchase “nearly there”after offer accepted

EXMOOR Associates (EA), the property-buying company set up to acquire original Lynton & Barnstaple Railway trackbed, has had its offer to buy Bratton Fleming station accepted. A previous offer made by an unknown third party to buy the converted station, marketed for offers in excess of £325,000, fell through, opening the door for EA to big again. The EA offer was made following an appeal in issue 268, and is backed by two “generous” loans which must be repaid. However, EA has been asked by the vendors to wait several weeks while they find an alternative property to buy, before signing the contract. welsh pony may headline three englands late august spectacular

NEWLY-RESTORED Ffestiniog Railway ‘large England’0-4-0STT No. 5 Welsh Pony is set to star on the line in late August, along with its two operational smaller sisters. It will mark another major first for the railway as it and No. 2 Prince and No. 4 Palmerston have never run together in the heritage era. As reported last issue, a worldwide audience viewed the launch of Welsh Pony at Boston Lodge Works on Saturday, June 27, through the line’s Facebook page, and saw it make its first movements in more than 80 years, part of its time being spent plinthed at the entrance to Porthmadog Harbour station. robert stephenson lifting bridge moves to gcr mountsorrel branch

A LIFTING bridge built by Robert Stephenson is to be connected by rail after six decades – following its move to the Great Central Railway’s Mountsorrel branch terminus. Leicester City Council, Leicestershire Industrial History Society and the Mountsorrel and Rothley Community Heritage Centre have announced a new project to restore the Leicester Lift Bridge, which was previously on display at Snibston Discovery Park at Coalville, until it closed in 2016. In 1830, George Stephenson won the contract to build the Leicester & Swannington Railway, which was built primarily to carry coal from the west Leicestershire fields. Because he was working on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway at the time, George sent his son Robert to handle the project.
