Ever wonder how we choose our covers? The decision to run one photo over another is probably the single most important call we make each month. Not only does it highlight our content, but it can significantly affect whether you buy the magazine. Our loyal readers, who regularly buy us at the newsstand, don’t judge us by our cover because they know what’s inside will satisfy, but the rest of those newsstand dawdlers… don’t. Occasional buyers need to be swayed by an arresting cover image, a big name they follow, a promise of a must-have recipe, or 30 pages of bathrooms, for example…. But it’s that single cover image that has to do the most work. A “mass-market cover” is one that will appeal to a wide range of readers. A holiday cover…

I can’t wait to pick up a copy of your magazine each month. There’s always something special and new to find in each issue. Thank you!—HOLLY SPANIER, Minneapolis, Minn. New subscriber to House & Home here! Might I suggest you consider adding wood flooring details in your Source Guide, including the manufacturer and colour. I’ve found tile details but not hardwood. Looking forward to the next issue to arrive in my mailbox!—VALERIE LITTLE, North Vancouver, B.C. I absolutely love what Brian and Michayla did with this older home (“Bungalow Perfect,” September), especially the exterior brick painted white. Thank you for featuring these incredible updates to older homes, as there are so many of us that own them and love the ideas.—SARAH PARKER, London, Ont. I can’t put down the September 2021 issue! I’ve…

GOTTA HAVE IT Bring holiday decorations on trend by filling clear glass ornaments with dried flowers in soft, monochromatic hues. SHOP THESTYLEWELL Vancouver’s rich community of creatives and makers inspired Lisa Wrixon to launch thestylewell, a retail space in North Vancouver’s Edgemont Village offering a unique mix of decorative accessories. “I wanted to create a place where locals could shop to find valuable pieces for their homes, discuss their projects and share their renovation stories, all while I help them find the perfect pillow,” says Lisa. A former brand strategist for Indaba Trading and trained interior designer, Lisa opened the 800-square-foot shop in May. It’s one of several independent businesses predominantly owned by women in the mountainside neighbourhood, just a 10-minute drive from downtown Vancouver. A self-proclaimed “huntergatherer,” Lisa brings in globally sourced…

cranberry

WHY WE LOVE IT A gorgeous, saturated shade with ruby red undertones, cranberry is our winter colour crush. Use it on wooden furniture, either in a layered antique finish or straight from the can. Paint a feature door, buy lacquered or upholstered furniture and use accents or textiles in this lively hue. Pair it with navy or off-whites to make it pop. “CR ANBERRY IS A STRONG, OPTIMISTIC COLOUR THAT YOU CAN HAVE FUN WITH”—Emma Reddington MAKE A STATEMENT In a playful blend of old and new, Tom Scheerer uses a painted cranberry door as the exclamation point on his vacation home kitchen in Maine. Combined with wooden chairs and checkerboard flooring in the same berry hue, the layered look is a balance of rustic and preppy. INSTANT HITS DEEP: Neon Red (2087-10), Benjamin Moore. SOFT: No…
