so canada!

At the start of the year, a few of us gathered to discuss a major milestone: our country’s 150th anniversary. The July issue of H&H would be a celebration of Canadian style, we all agreed. Only problem was, we couldn’t agree on what that meant — or rather, what it looked like.“If someone said, ‘Scandi style,’ we’d all have an instant mental picture,” said senior design editor Joel Bray. “But what is Canadian style right now?”“I think our look’s moved way beyond rustic-chic,” senior design editor Stacey Smithers chimed in. “We’ve got more swagger and sex appeal — I mean, just look at Justin and Sophie. They’ve made it hip to be Canadian.”Murmurs of acknowledgment rippled through the room.We were onto something. As we worked toward our deadline, it became…

VALERIE WILCOX Photographer, “Editor DIY” (page 30)Best summer food? Anything on the barbecue! Cooking and eating outside is a real treat after a long Canadian winter. Favourite Canadian-designed furniture piece? Paloform outdoor firepits. They’re so beautiful to look at. Place in Canada you’re dying to visit? I’m hoping to see Salt Spring Island. B.C. is my favourite summer province, and nothing is more relaxing than island life.SUMMER THORNTON Room designer, “Colour Spotlight” (page 40)Favourite Canadian-designed furniture piece? I love Montauk sofas, which are manufactured in Montreal. They’re insanely comfortable and gorgeous, too — a tough combo to find! Place in Canada you’re dying to visit? I’m a Francophile at heart, so I can’t wait to visit Montreal, as well as tour the rest of Quebec. It’s been on my list…

The June issue was a “pinch me” kind of edition, and I loved everything about it! I clearly identified with Beth’s “Editor’s Page,” as discussing money was taboo in our household as well. To this day I even get “white coat syndrome” discussing finances with my bank ... and that’s my own money!— JOAN YOUNGGardening conditions vary widely across this vast and often cold country. Please keep this in mind when making plant recommendations, as you did in your May issue. Species that thrive in Toronto and Vancouver will shudder and die elsewhere.— BETHEditors’ note: For our “Garden Report,”we asked a number of horticultural experts for recommendations that were suited to as many zones as possible. Of course, individual climates and soil conditions do vary, so we remind our readers…

HOUSE & HOME: Have you always been a fan of design?ZITA COBB: I’m not sure I am a fan per se. But when design remembers it’s a servant, it’s such a great tool. I’m a fan of Matthew B. Crawford and Bruce Mau, people who use design to tackle problems.H&H: Can you describe Fogo Island Inn’s style?ZC: People have described it as handmade modern, but I think there’s something very natural in it. It carries the rhythm of opposites that is life. It’s plain and fancy. Sophisticated and naive. Pragmatic but filled with humour. It embodies the constraint of an island in the North Atlantic but, at the same time, hints at possibility.H&H: What’s the best thing about collaborating with international designers like Ineke Hans, Donna Wilson and Studiomama?ZC: I’m…
