ah, summer holidays – ideal for dreaming up some plans

Reading, cooking, swimming, repeat. That’s the sum total of my summer holidays planned. The beach might change – perhaps a little tootle down the coast to see my parents and a couple of friends – as will the reading material, but the basic format won’t. For me, that’s the beauty of summer holidays. I don’t tend to plan anything in particular, just letting the long, lazy days roll on and on. What day is it? The only thing I’ve realised I’m missing is a hammock. I’m not normally the hanging type, but after seeing the ideal set-up on page 70 (beware: only turn to it if you’re ready to go a soft shade of coastal-rural green), I’m a convert. Beautiful pool to one side, rolling hills to the other. Sigh. For those…

what’s on our radar

THE COOLEST THING WE’VE SEEN LATELY The high point of market editor @joseph_gardner’s recent trip to New York? His visit to the @apparatusstudio showroom. The brand’s designs can be found locally via @criteriacollection: criteriacollection.com.au. CULT CLASSIC ‘VEGA’ CHAIR AND OTTOMAN BY JASPER MORRISON The form: A chair and ottoman on a tubular steel base with rounded cushions. What makes them special: Jasper Morrison is one of the most well-known contemporary British designers and first came to prominence with accessory and furniture designs for brands such as Cappellini, Vitra and Magis in the ’90s. ‘Vega’ for Artifort is an early design prior to Morrison finding fame with work such as the ‘Air’ chair for Magis. ‘Vega’, designed in ’97, shows Morrison reducing its form to ultimate simplicity, with a nod to ’60s sci-fi shapes. outdoor tables

‘Monarch’ table DESIGNER: Nathan Goldsworthy of Goldsworthy Studio What do you think about when designing an outdoor table? “The material is certainly the main challenge, but there is a definite visual shift that takes place – it’s surprising how pieces can look out of place when they move outdoors,” says Auckland- based designer Nathan. His ‘Monarch’ table (above) stands as an elegant piece for in-home and in-garden use, but mastering the materials is key to the table’s success. “The legs are made from raw aluminium, going through extruding, folding, hardening and anodising processes, so there’s a lot to manage to ensure each step is undertaken correctly,” says Nathan. And when all these elements come together the ‘Monarch’ certainly has a regal quality. From NZ$1245, goldsworthystudio.com. ‘Picnic’ table DESIGNERS: Tara Wilcox and Nicola Grey of Redfox…
