Re: Cool Tools & Hip Tips: Stone Setting, August 2017 I look forward to Helen Driggs’ Cool Tools & Hip Tips in Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist each issue. Usually, I am already at least aware of most of the tools featured in the column. In the August issue, there was one that threw me for a “how is it used.” That was the setter’s wheel. It appears to be a tool supplied only by Contenti. How is it actually used? The short explanation given by the Contenti catalog and the column lacked an illustrated methodology on the application of this tool. I owned antique, contemporary, stone, and silver rings for every occasion, and though I still adore them, my hands are too busy in the studio making rings to wear any. EVERY TIME I SIT DOWN TO create a project, I am thankful for the tools I own. Having amassed a nice collection, I feel I can make anything from almost nothing. And though I have quite a few tools, I always seem to go the same ones. This project was no exception. The disc cutter has allowed me to make use of all kinds of scrap, keeping waste and cost to a minimum. The bench shear gives me a straight cut every time and makes easy work of the project.
