Unless there’s writing in or on it or it’s equipped with audio, a piece of jewelry really can’t ask a question, and yet some designs manage to engage us so well we carry on entire conversations about the work with ourselves. If you want to push a design from okay to compelling, pare down an elaborate design so it’s easier to reproduce, or simply explore where your next design could go, there are some basics you can think about to help get you there. Re: My Turn, April 2017 I just received Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist for April. Please help me understand what you’re saying [in your My Turn column]. Are you supporting using our natural resources, like forests, instead of preserving them? Is that what you were communicating? Large-scale commercial mining has “burdensome” regulations? Have you seen the pollution these businesses create? Are you aware of the poisons going into our waters? Yes, “living entities” use these resources, but if we allow using the resources for ourselves instead of “just admire” them, then as happens too often, there is no stopping the use of it all.
