LIKE CLUSTERS OF GRAPES, a new quartz from Indonesia is proving to be a crowd pleaser. Technically known as botryoidal for its grape-like appearance and chalcedony — a broad term that covers quartz that doesn’t grow in even microscopically visible crystals — the new-to-market material commonly ranges in color from soft lavender to deep, rich purple, enhancing the comparison to grapes. The material can also be green, though, from pale to deep sage or fir to electric, while rarest of all colors are the blues and yellows. The bubbled surface can be smooth or covered with fine drusy, that sparkling coat of tiny, even crystals that glitters in the light. Some cutters cab the stones into traditional domes, revealing a pattern of concentric circles. Most designers, though, prefer working with these stones…
