editor’s letter

Cast your mind back to those schoolyard years, and chances are you can remember the sting of a bully’s actions or words. I recall it distinctly. My so-called bestie, Lucy, decided one day she wasn’t my friend anymore and convinced others to follow in her traitorous footsteps. For days, I’d chase them in the lunch break like a desperate puppy – but every time I approached, they collectively bolted. I was nine. A week later, all was forgiven and life returned to normal – yet I never forgot, and still vividly recall the pang of rejection. But I was lucky; aside from those days, I wasn’t a victim of bullying like millions of kids who end up with profound emotional scars. Studies show that children who are relentlessly teased are…

Academy-award winner, mother and muse, Julia Roberts is well-known for her elegant fashion moments. From her love of sharp tailoring to enduring red-carpet moments (who could forget the black-and-white vintage Valentino gown Roberts wore to receive her Academy Award in 2001?), the actress is a radiant, classic beauty for a modern era. No wonder she is the face of Lancôme’s La Vie Est Belle En Rose, the joyful new incarnation of the much-loved perfume La Vie Est Belle, for which Roberts has been the face since the scent launched in 2012. At the shoot in Los Angeles, her classic style was realised once again with a crisp white shirt, utilitarian pants and man-style lace-ups. The look seamlessly blended the actress’ innate femininity and distinctive modernity. Roberts’ beauty look was equally timeless. Flawless…

GET SMART What is it about these bags that spells instant polish? Is it their neat, boxy shapes, their rigid top handles or the gleaming gold hardware? Either way, each makes a practically perfect option for nine-to-five and beyond. TOP TIP Structured styles will keep your life in order. SLIP INTO NEUTRAL Tonal dressing (with a focus on texture) never looked so good – we’re loving top-to-toe layers of cream and camel, toffee and taupe. Beige, yes, but never bland. TOP TIP Introduce print via stand-out accessories. TAILOR MADE This year, the international runways were all about the suit and tailored separates. Let this serve as inspiration for your own workwear repertoire. TOP TIP Cinch your waist for a feminine point of difference. LOOK SHARP We’re calling this the new office shoe: mid-heeled, pointed and dressed up with dazzling details – it’s the…

diary of a dress

THE GOWN TOOK 400 HOURS OF DEDICATED MANPOWER TO PERFECT Despite his death in February, Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, continues to live on with some of his final designs being re-created and re-imagined months after his passing. Honouring her “great friend” during May’s Cannes Film Festival, actress Penélope Cruz worked with Lagerfeld’s successor Virginie Viard to craft a version of one of Lagerfeld’s final designs for the premiere of Cruz’s new film Pain and Glory, a last nod to the visionary’s enduring presence on the red carpet. The haute-couture gown, which featured capped sleeves, a full skirt and intricate hand-painted detailing, took 400 hours of dedicated manpower to perfect. Changing it from its original colouring of baby pink – the gown debuted on Lagerfeld’s final runway in January – to a deep blue…
