WHILE LIVING’ March issue has been garden-themed in the past, we’ve decided instead to feature a garden in every issue of the year. A gardener, after all, needs to dream and plot—especially during the coldest months of the year, when so little can be done outdoors in most parts of the country. the composting cycle

AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, composting has been a part of my life. When I was a child, my family kept a small bucket next to the kitchen sink where all food scraps (except meat or fat) were deposited. The bucket was emptied every day onto the compost heap at the back of the yard. My dad talked with excitement about the transformation of these scraps into “black gold,” a substance he said would revitalize his backyard gardens, adding nutrients back to the soil. This early inspiration instilled in me a set of organic-gardening practices and good habits for healthy soil and plants that I regularly employ. CLOTH AND GOODS | Portland, Oregon Back in the ’90s, when Melissa Newirth was selling pillows made out of vintage linen rescued from an old barn, a friend suggested she try marketing them on the Internet. “Considering I had just bought my very first computer, I laughed and thought she was crazy,” says Newirth. But never say never: Last April, the interior designer, stylist, and self-described “textile nut” opened Cloth and Goods (clothandgoods.com). The aptly named online shop sells various home goods made out of textiles in Newirth’s vast collection—like pillows fashioned from vintage African raffia cloth, napkins made from Japanese prints, and hand-blocked pillowcases from India. Some of them are commissioned to independent artisans, which helps her achieve her main goal: “to offer things no one else has.”…

Atlanta’s size and traffic are legendary, so the key to navigating its 200-plus neighborhoods is knowing where the gems are. On a recent trip to the industrial area of Westside, Martha discovered (and fell in love with) the culinary market Star Provisions and the restaurant Bacchanalia, as well as the neighboring women’s-clothing boutique Ann Mashburn. Just a couple of miles away is Buckhead Village. Known for its Georgian-style mansions and Civil War history, it is experiencing a renaissance, with an influx of distinctly modern newcomers (think artisanal cocktails and rosehip chocolates). It has the dreamy combination of old and new worlds that we find so exciting . . . plus, it’s easily walkable and provides a sense of this bustling Southern city’s great charm, history, and style.
