No matter what our ages or whether or not we have children at home, September will always feel like back-to-school. It’s when we hit the reset button, when we stuff our feet back into real shoes, when we tap the last bits of sand out of our summer tote bags. While it’s often the most beautiful time of year—it’s hot (but not oppressively so), and late-summer produce is still plentiful—we bemoan our faded tans and requisite cardigans after sunset. It’s not just the transition from outdoor to indoor living and the need to put everything (back) in its place that take some getting used to; it’s the shift in mind-set. DELIGHTFUL DESIGN My favorite Japanese treasure is this set of 10 small diamond-shaped wooden condiment trays called yakumizara. They are designed to hold accompaniments like ginger, wasabi, and pickled vegetables. About 35 years ago, my husband; my daughter, Alexis; and I made our first trip to Japan, to visit with Japanese publishers and printers and to learn about the country’s culture, art, and food. I was immediately entranced with everything I saw, and especially intrigued and excited to learn firsthand about its centuries-old artisanship and design. Everything appealed to me—the fish-and-soy-based diet, the exquisite workmanship and use of the finest materials in all manufacturing, and the intense attention to even the very smallest details.
