Home has been a place of both sanctuary and confinement this year. Among the many life lessons lockdown has taught us, it has highlighted the impact of our surroundings on our happiness and well-being. It’s no surprise that there has been a boom in home improvement and gardening, as people finally tackled those jobs they had put off for years, while charity shops were inundated following the great Covid clear-out. At the time of going to press, we are in the midst of another lockdown and unsure of whether we will be able to spend Christmas with our wider family and friends. I do hope so, but whatever happens, I’m looking forward to 2021 and feel optimistic that it will be a chance for a fresh start. This issue is…

STAR LETTER CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN I thought you might like to see the traditional Advent calendar my nine-year-old daughter and I made using the beautiful Josie Shenoy print from the December issue. I loved the print, but didn’t have a frame and wanted to display it somehow, and when we saw the traditional Advent calendars in the magazine it gave us the idea to make our own. Together, we traced the window outlines onto plain card, then drew pictures and wrote jokes inside the squares. Then I used a craft knife to cut and score the windows on the print, glued the two sheets of card together and wrote 1-25 on the windows, to be opened in the run up to the big day. eye on design

How did you become a colourist? I have always been very artistic, and fascinated by colours and textures. When I went to live in Australia in 1989 I had a chance meeting with the owner of Porters Paints, the only manufacturer of traditional paint finishes in Australia. I fell in love with the pigments and textures; I didn’t know much about it, but I was very enthusiastic and found making colours came naturally to me. I stayed with Porters for seven years, becoming the colourist and manager of the company. In 1996, after moving back to London, I opened my own paint and colour company focusing on hand-mixed, sustainable formulas and have never looked back. I’m now celebrating 25 years in the industry and am as passionate about creating paint as…

a fresh perspective

Ever since their creation in the mid-to-late-19th century, the prints of Morris & Co have witnessed enduring appeal. Rooted deeply in the natural world, the timeless prints, which capture the simple pleasures of brambles, blackbirds and garden blooms, have continually been reinvented to bring natural beauty to interiors. Inspired by the longevity, simplicity and richness of the iconic designs, architectural interior designer Ben Pentreath has now collaborated with Morris & Co to continue this story, bringing an exciting new dimension to the fabrics and wallpapers with his Queen Square collection. ‘I’ve always loved the designs of William Morris, and we’ve used his superb, timeless papers and fabrics in many of our decoration projects over the years, so it was a wonderful experience to be let loose in the Morris &…
