• In a film that will possibly take you more than a month to fully digest, Isabelle Huppert hunts for the man who raped her in her own home, while juggling an affair with her best friend’s husband, a frayed relationship with her son, tension at work and an obsession with her neighbour. Elle is melodramatic to its core, but would you expect anything less from the director of Showgirls? Huppert deserves her Oscar nomination for her complex, nuanced depiction of Michèle; a woman both distant and cold, but loving and passionate at the same time. For the most part, the plot feels like a French soap opera, flitting from horror to comedy and just about every genre in-between.…
