IT has been a busy season for firefighters in the Western Cape. Over the past month, Working on Fire has responded to more than 35 fires, scorching over 2 100 hectares of valuable vegetation.
The urgency of the situation has escalated, with the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service tackling upwards of 2 000 incidents just in December alone.
Tragically, the fire season has not come without a cost; 11 lives have been lost to these blazes, with the latest incident in Gugulethu resulting in two fatalities and displacing over 16 residents.
