METALLICS Create luminous metallic highlights. Because metallics are thicker than alcohol ink, they don’t blend easily on their own. Add drops of blending solution or rubbing alcohol to boost blending power. RUBBING ALCOHOL Use rubbing alcohol to dilute alcohol inks. Spray alcohol onto applied inks to create a marbled effect. Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to remove dye and leave clear dots behind. FORCED AIR Purse your lips and blow on alcohol ink to spread it across your surface. Spray rubbing alcohol over the ink, then blow to get a repeating wave pattern. Blow through a straw to concentrate air onto one spot and create whimsical splats. ABSTRACT THINKING Turn paint splatters into a modern masterpiece, this photo. Cut plywood to desired size. Cut a drop cloth 6 inches larger on each side than the plywood. On a flat protected surface and using a plastic spoon, paint stir stick, or other tool, splatter paint on the canvas. We used color samples of latex paint (A). When canvas is dry, coat one side of the plywood with spray adhesive; place painted canvas on the plywood and pull taut. Staple canvas in place on the back. GLOBE TREKKER A three-light chandelier sets an adventurous dining scene, this photo. Start by removing any hardware from the globes. Use a hole saw drill bit to drill a hole through the top of the globe large enough to fit a 11/2-inch light socket. Drill a second hole at the bottom of the globe. Cut off the bottom portion with a saber saw and small blade (we followed the line that runs through Argentina as our guide). Sand any rough edges. To allow for more light to shine through the fixture, drill small holes at random points around the globe. Install the cord kit, and wire into the electrical box in the ceiling. Step 2 Soak the corner of a paper towel in a mix of equal parts vinegar and water. Using a fingertip, gently swipe the wet corner along the paint.
