A recent announcement by King Goodwill Zwelithini that he had instituted a process to have his subjects residing on communal Ingonyama Trust land eventually gain title deeds has been widely welcomed. Managed by the Ingonyama Trust Board (ITB) since 1997, the approximately 2,8 million hectares of land, of which the Zulu king is the sole trustee, constitutes about 60% of KwaZulu-Natal’s land area. Angola wanted to increase banana cultivation as the country had the right climatic conditions to support large-scale production. Dr John Robinson, world-renowned banana specialist and technical consultant at Du Roi Laboratory in Tzaneen, told Farmer’s Weekly that there was an opportunity to cultivate more bananas in Angola. “The country has a tropical environment with warm winter temperatures, no fruit chilling and the potential to export good quality fruit to Europe and the UK,” he said. According to Robinson, production regions Caxito, Kwanza Sul and Benguela were situated near harbours, which was beneficial for future exports. “[The Port of] Lobito is the best port with a tradition of exporting bananas, and Angola has just sent out its first export consignment to Portugal from Lobito,” he said. Two outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) have been confirmed by the Agricultural Research Council’s Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (ARC OVI) in areas where the disease has not been recorded before. These are a communal set-up in Ipeleng Township near Schweizer-Reneke, in the North West, and on a farm near Koffiefontein, in the Free State. The virus causes haemorrhagic fever that results in high mortality rates in pigs. The disease was endemic to Africa, but in South Africa it was usually limited to the red-line area in Limpopo, said Simon Streicher, CEO of the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation. “It’s not supposed to be in these new areas and the question is how it spread to those regions,” he said. Technology such as drip irrigation is being used successfully by farmers in Israel to grow more crops with less water, yet the adoption of the practice in other water-scarce countries such as South Africa is still low. Speaking at the Israel-South Africa Water Week in Johannesburg, Itai Melchior, head of trade at the Israeli embassy in South Africa, said that in Israel more than 90% of crops were drip-irrigated. By contrast, in South Africa only 10% to 15% of crops were watered using drip irrigation. “We hope that through farmer education this figure will increase,” said Melchior. Land reform in South Africa has been mismanaged, resulting in tragic consequences for its beneficiaries. This was according to Tony Leon, former political leader, who spoke at the Northern Cape Red Meat Producers’ congress held recently in Kimberley. Leon said that the programmes to address the injustices of the past and to restore land to beneficiaries were understandably necessary. “However, there’s a big difference between good intentions and poor results,” he said. According to Leon, the former white government had nurtured white farmers, but South Africa’s first black government was neglecting black farmers. “I have no doubt that this was not the intention; indeed the motive was the opposite. UNDER GOOD CONDITIONS, THE PLANT BEARS FRUIT FIVE TIMES A YEAR At R50/kg, one would think more South African farmers would be producing dragon fruit. However, although local conditions are ideal for growing this cactus plant, to date plant material has been scarce in South Africa and the number of available cultivars limited. Moreover, these cultivars have not been well-received by consumers due to their bland taste. Now new, sweeter cultivars are being made available under licence to growers by Amorentia Nursery based in Tzaneen, Limpopo. Owner Howard Blight says that he bought the plant material for 14 dragon fruit varieties from a well-known plant collector, Keith Wilson, who imported it from the US. A solar water heater requires a capital investment of at least R14 000. Someone recently wanted to know from me why the fuel-saving product he had bought a few months before had stopped working. Initially, his fuel consumption had dropped by 8% – less than the 20% claimed by the manufacturer but good enough to keep him happy. Later, however, his fuel consumption returned to what it had been. Large-scale commercial farming enterprise, ZZ2, has refurbished, extended and updated a tomato packhouse on the farm, ESME-four, near Musina. The new packhouse has 180 workers and is 6 500m² in size, of which 4 000m² consist of coldroom facilities. It has the capacity to cool 30t tomatoes/hour, while up to 28t/hour can be packaged, according to Ian van Brouwershaven, project leader at ZZ2. “The project was a race against time. It had to be in operation when the first crops were harvested, which gave us three months to complete it,” he said. “An internal project management team coordinated the contractors and more than 150 people were involved in the project,” he said. Lion numbers have increased by 12% in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, while decreasing by 60% in western, central and eastern African states over the past 21 years. This was according to a recently released Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) statement. The statement followed a meeting by the 28 African Lion Range States that reached a broad agreement to discuss lion conservation, management and restoration of habitat. Habitat loss and degradation are the predominant threat to lions in Africa, triggered by encroaching human settlements. Prey depletion as a result of poaching for bush meat, indiscriminate killing and livestock predation are other major causes of the decline. The long-term outlook for the agricultural sector remains negative, according to the latest Agribusiness Confidence Index for the first quarter of 2016. Wandile Sihlobo, head: economic and agribusiness intelligence at Agbiz, said that policy uncertainty was one of the main drivers limiting investment and business activity in the sector. The Agribusiness Confidence Index is compiled quarterly by Agbiz and the Industrial Development Corporation and reflects the perceptions of SA agribusiness decision-makers on various aspects of the agricultural economy. South Africa’s first-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) figures for 2016 show that the economy and the agriculture sector are struggling to achieve growth. The country’s GDP contracted by 1,2% quarter on quarter due to weakening economic activity. The agriculture sector remained in recession, based on a negative growth of 6,5% quarter on quarter, after having contracted by 6,7% in the fourth quarter of 2015. The figures, released by Statistics SA, were worse than market expectations, said Wandile Sihlobo, head: economic and agribusiness intelligence at Agbiz. Growth in agriculture was also unlikely to improve in the second and third quarters of 2016 due to the aftermath of the drought. At the time of writing, the value had improved slightly to between R14,50 and R15,50. Economists are divided on the future value of the rand. With drought conditions still prevailing in many parts of the summer rainfall region, farmers will have to adjust their winter feeding strategies to compensate for nutritional losses. The wool market traded 5,4% lower this week and the Merino indicator decreased by 875 points to close at R152,06 (clean), while the Australian market fell only 1,7%. The 2015/2016 season closed as expected with strong demand for medium length wool and excellent competition for longer and better quality wools, said Cape Wools. However, the rand strengthened by 5,5% against the US dollar compared with the average rate at the previous sale. It strengthened 3,7% against the euro as well, to trade at R16,83. South Africa, the world’s seventh-largest producer of wine, will soon be doubling its exports of duty-free wine to the EU after the recent signing of an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the EU and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), which also includes Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland and Botswana. The EPA means that South Africa can now export 110 million litres of duty-free wine, up from the current 48 million litres, according to Wines of South Africa. The agreement, which was finalised in July 2014, must be ratified by each SACU member before the end of September to come into effect in October, said Michael Mokhoro, spokesperson for South Africa’s wine and brandy industry. The biggest problems encountered by the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (RPO) in the Western Cape over the past year, were the drought and the increased risk it imposed on animal health, as well as stock theft. John Dürr, chairman of the RPO in the Western Cape, highlighted these issues at the organisation’s recent annual meeting near Wellington. “The recent drought has once again brought the important aspect of biosecurity on our farms to our attention,” said Dürr. There are specific slaughter regulations aimed at preventing salmonella from spreading to humans, but the absence of regular abattoir inspections in rural areas could result in some abattoirs taking short cuts that could increase the risk of the disease. The vaccine supply shortage at Onderstepoort Biological Products’ (OBP) and the increase in animal vaccine costs were amongst the topics discussed at the Northern Cape Red Meat Producers’ Organisation’s (RPO) Animal Health Committee (NCRPO) congress held in Kimberley recently. Dr Koos Louw, chairperson of the NCRPO, said that brucellosis was out of control in the province, and that antibiotic resistance in livestock had become a worldwide problem. He added that while sheath rot remained problematic, research conducted by Stellenbosch University had recently produced promising results. “It would be remiss of me to announce the preliminary results, but I can announce that some 700 organisms have been identified in the fight against sheath rot,” he said. Some people still do not accept that growing GM crops brings benefits. The PG Economics group in the UK reported in their recently released 1996 to 2014 analysis that the global economic benefit of GM crops in 2014 amounted to US$17,7 billion (R283 billion), two-thirds of which came from higher yield and extra production, with developing countries gaining relatively more than developed ones. The environment also benefited due to facilitated conservation agriculture to reduce tilling practices, insecticide use, and using more benign herbicides. BETTER TERMS ARE AVAILABLE IN COUNTRIES CLOSE BY The deduction allowed for research and development (R&D) is available under current legislation only until 2022. As is to be expected, not everything related to R&D is deductible. In fact, the deduction is subject to stringent and narrow interpretation and requirements.
