It has been hailed as a step in the right direction for victims of domestic violence – last week Sally Challen, who killed her husband Richard after decades of psychological abuse, won an appeal to have her murder conviction quashed, to the relief of her two sons, who have campaigned tirelessly on her behalf. There will now be a retrial for Sally, 65, who had sought to have her conviction reduced to manslaughter. She has already served eight years in prison, despite enduring 40 years of abuse. The decision suggests the criminal justice system now understands the seriousness of coercive control and, finally, victims are being given the justice they deserve.
