EastEnders is working alongside Terrance Higgins Trust for Zack’s story, in order to accurately reflect what it is now like to live with HIV. The soap joined forces with the charity back in the early 1990s, when Mark Fowler was the first soap character to be diagnosed with HIV. The plot helped to change attitudes towards HIV in the UK – and the Trust hopes Zack’s story can spark more conversations about living with the virus. “Over 30 years on from Mark’s storyline and sadly myths about HIV are still held by far too many people,” says Ian Green, chief executive at Terrence Higgins Trust. “The incredible progress we’ve made around HIV means people on effective treatment can’t pass on the virus and can have a normal lifespan.
