LIVE SHOW
A SARDONIC RANT
FRAN LEBOWITZ
Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto, and National Arts Centre, Ottawa
May 8 and May 9
FRAN LEBOWITZ HAS TURNED complaining into high art. Her targets are the petty absurdities of modern life—tourists, slow walkers, bad manners, landlords, wellness culture, aftershave—but she’s using them to talk about power, money, class and the broader unravelling of civic society. The quintessential New Yorker is one of the last great public intellectuals with mainstream appeal and, in today’s bloated opinion economy, her mix of cranky humour, keen observation and perfectly honed disdain stands apart. Expect the signature uniform—men’s jacket, white shirt, Levi’s, cowboy boots—when she arrives in Toronto and Ottawa for more complaining.
