My parents were political refugees who had to escape from Iran in ’79. They went to London, where my uncle was living, when I was just 20 days old. I constantly think about what would have happened had we not escaped. Today there is still a lack of freedom of speech in Iran, with lawyers, artists and journalists being imprisoned. In November 2019 hundreds of Iranian protesters—including women and teenagers—were killed by state security forces and thousands more imprisoned.
