• Good show! Quiltmakers in the NSW country town of Wauchope were delighted to conduct their quilt show late last year as a community event that was held in multiple venues and along the High Street. The town’s main department store and many smaller outlets displayed quilts and quilted items in their windows, while other quilts were exhibited in community rooms and the local library, art gallery and Anglican church. More than 40 quilts were entered for judging. Janelle Thomas took out Best in Show for her version of Maggie Walker’s The Blue Collection appliqué quilt. At Riverlea Quilt shop (SA), I learnt about the famous 19th century woodblock print artist, Utagawa Hiroshige, and I particularly admired his winter scenes. This inspired me to make a triptych of three of his snow scenes which showed the hard life of people in the areas of deep snow and long cold winters. Lagniappe is a French word meaning “a little more”. “A little more” is what Judy gained when she pulled together a collection of impressive leftover blocks and components from previous projects. This medallion-style wall hanging features differing colours and patterns in each section, and then it all comes together amazingly as a very well-executed palette. Our 2023 Block of the Month quilt, Arcadia, is an amazing collaboration between Keryn Emmerson and Kim Hurley. It’s designed, stitched and quilted by Keryn Emmerson of Kin Quilting Designs using the fabric range from the new St Etienne collection by Kim Hurley of L’uccello, designed for Devonstone Collection. At the beginning of the process, Keryn and Kim discussed the new St Etienne range and the quilt design extensively, bringing to life a medallion-style quilt that features rotary cutting and fussy cutting to truly focus on the design elements of the fabrics. The 2023 quilt will feature fabrics from Kim’s newest range, St Etienne, as well as a few complementary prints from her previous collections, Rue Floriane and Comptoir De Toile.
