cool as ice monster

Benjamin tells us this build was inspired by his 7-year-old son. They were watching vintage monster trucks on YouTube and the kid fell in love with the Michigan Ice Monster, so he decided to build something tough and reliable but with not so much power that a child couldn’t comfortably drive it. It runs the stock twin Tamiya 540L motors with a Hobbywing 880 dual motor ESC with 6-cell NiMH Venom power. Benjamin started gathering parts and building last summer so he would have it ready by Christmas. The kid is awfully proud of his truck and he makes sure to tell his dad that he’s the “crew chief” and they talk about all the “hot rod” stuff he wants to put on his truck to keep making it better! dressed up defender

Tom’s Traxxas TRX4 shows what can be done to a nearly stock truck to dress it up and give it a unique personality. He starts with a TRX4 Defender 110 and added some GMade SR-02 wheels, a few carefully chosen handmade scale details and some custom paint. Tom painted the body on the outside surface to retain the matte finish of Tamiya’s AS-19 Intermediate Blue and AS-20 Insignia White paints. He put an extra layer of Tamiya PS Silver down before the color coats to help them stick to the slick Lexan shell. BUILD HIGHLIGHTS - Chassis: Traxxas TRX-4- Body: Traxxas Defender 110- Power System: Stock Traxxas- Battery: Traxxas 2S Lipo- Wheels and Tires: Traxxas Canyon Trail tires on GMade SR-02 wheels- Paint: Tamiya AS-20 Insignia White, AS-19 Intermediate Blue, with a…

patina power wagon

Art has been my passion since I was about six years old; I drew everything I could see. Recreating what I saw and drawing it on paper always fascinated me. I continued and eventually made creating art my career. I work on creating visual design through print as well as through technology. Cars were also a passion of mine, I played with Hot Wheels and die-cast cars; as I got older (about 12 to 13 years old); I started playing with RC cars. My first RC car was the FireFox made by Shinsei Radio Elecon. It looked just like the Brain Buggy created by Bandai of Japan, which was licensed to Playart. Those cars came in silver and red. In 1978, my dad got the silver one for me for Christmas.…

bigger & badder

Can you make a Traxxas X-Maxx bigger and badder than it already comes from the factory? If you asked the good people over at RPM R/C Products that question, the answer you’d get is a resounding, YES! There probably isn’t a single RC vehicle out there that they can’t enhance. As we learned a few issues ago when we took Traxxas’ impressive X-Maxx monster truck out for a bash session, the beast moves earth like nobody’s business. In fact when we drove it at high speed past ourselves, much of the terrain it inherently dug up as it blasted by ended up in our faces and stuck in our hair. It’s that powerful and that’s the box stock X-Maxx we are talking about. Now take the monstrosity that is the X-Maxx and…

big blue makeover

Rob’s truck started life as an Axial SMT10 Grave Digger but he didn’t care for the green color to the chassis so he dyed it black and went with the famous blue motif for the JConcepts F250 body in what he calls his Bigfoot Sport. For running gear he added transmission and diff gears from Hot Racing and a set of Fast Eddy bearings all around. It rolls on JConcepts Tribute wheels wrapped in Pro-Line Decimator tires. Power comes courtesy of a Hobbywing waterproof brushless ESC controlling a Castle Creations 5700kv motor. Handling improvements come from the waterproof steering servo from Eco Power and a sway bar kit from SoCal RC.…
