hello

I’VE BEEN MEETING quite a few of you lovely readers lately – and coincidentally, too. One lady, I was seated across from at a dinner party. When we got talking about what we did for work, she professed her love for real living, then pulled a copy of the mag out of her bag to prove she wasn’t just being polite! Another was a charming sales assistant helping my friend select jewellery; she reached for her copy of real living from behind the display cabinet. I never get tired of meeting you all, and hearing about your decorating journeys. Speaking of which, this issue, we feature four amazing creative renovations in our homes section. They range from a 1960s apartment to a classic Victorian-era house, and have all been given thoroughly…

inner beauty

flawless foundation A natural-looking base will complement and elevate a red lip, and the same goes for bold and bright decor. Why? A neutral scheme is both versatile and timeless, so your attention is drawn to colourful items, but the overall look is classic. In this case, a jewel-toned sofa, Art Deco-inspired mirror and geometric rug. To keep it ‘modern’, stick to polished or refined materials and use restraint when applying texture – layers of heavy fabrics will feel dated. Or ease…

from raves to riches

IN ITS HEYDAY, Ibiza was the free-loving flower child of the Mediterranean. Soul-searching misfits, disco denizens and bohemians flocked to the Spanish party island to dabble in spiritualism with a side of hedonism – and to shop at Paula’s. More than a clothing store, Paula’s was the holy grail for hippies in the ’70s and ’80s, famous for its floor-to-ceiling floral interiors, fabulous runway shows and the loose fitting, playfully printed garments it sold. Paula’s was founded by Armin Heinemann (a German expat who maintains he was roped into buying it), who, with co-founder Stuart Rudnick, employed local seamstresses and began making colourful prints inspired by everything from curtains to sea creatures. The design process was fraught with flaws, but their cheap and cheerful clothes found a cult following –…

a fine art

CREATIVE we love TANJA KOVACEVIC WAS WORKING in the fashion industry when she signed up for a weekend jewellery-making class. “I thought I’d like to make something with my own two hands,” Tanja says. “I knew the minute I made my first ring that I wanted to keep doing it. And the rest is history!” Tanja launched her business, Petite Grand, in the sunroom of her home at the age of 34, which she says “was a good age. I had experience and felt more confident.” That was 2010. Now, she designs her line of delicate jewellery with her team in their Surry Hills studio, which Tanja describes as “a home away from home”. So, if you’ve been thinking about taking an after-work art class, consider this your impetus to sign…
