believe it or not

Moonshot Weirdness: Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry had a rubber arm, starting at least 37 games in 10 different seasons and tossing 303 complete games. That meant a lot of innings pitched (5,350), but also a lot of at bats during his first 10 seasons, spent with the National League’s San Francisco Giants. Unfortunately he didn’t give Giants fans much hope in the ninth spot. During the 1964 season, he managed just three hits in 56 at bats, good for a.054 average. At one point in this hapless run, San Francisco manager Alvin Dark declared, “There’ll be a man on the moon before Gaylord Perry hits a home run.” Well, he was right—barely. On July 20, 1969, around noon in San Francisco, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle touched the selenic surface.…

mikaaela shiffrin

Mikaela Shiffrin is the most dominant athlete on the planet. But that doesn’t mean she has an easy time accepting that fact. At last year’s ESPYs in Los Angeles, she was seated one row from the dramatically lit stage. She was among her peers: gymnast Simone Biles, soccer star Alex Morgan, and WNBA All-Star Breanna Stewart, her fellow nominees for Best Female Athlete. Not only did the skier expect to lose the award—Alex Morgan, fresh off the Women’s World Cup victory, took the prize—Shiffrin didn’t even prepare a speech. As the award ceremony unfolded, she felt “weird,” she says, “because it’s hard to imagine that I have a place there.” By there, she means next to Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, who spent most of the evening signing autographs for frenzied fans. She means…

talking trash

“OUR OPINION IS that this didn’t impact the game,” said Astros owner Jim Crane at a press conference in February, meant to address his team’s 2017 sign-stealing scandal. “We had a good team. We won the World Series. And we’ll leave it at that.” When asked by a reporter for clarification less than a minute later, Crane added, “I didn’t say it didn’t impact the game.” Thus began the great Astros botched-apology tour of 2020. In January, Major League Baseball released its report on Houston’s electronic sign-stealing. Players and coaches had used the video monitor near the dugout to decode opposing pitchers’ signals and then made noise to warn the batter if a certain pitch was coming—most notably by banging on a trash can. The league suspended general manager Jeff Lunhow and…

2020 vision

THE CHAMPS: The Dodgers are absolutely loaded. They won 106 games last year, set a National League record with 279 home runs, and had the best ERA in baseball. So what did they do? They picked up Mookie Betts, the 2018 AL MVP, from the Red Sox. (And got starter David Price, too.) L.A. has what it needs to end its 31-year title drought. THE LCS TEAMS: The Yankees’ acquisition of former Houston ace Gerrit Cole is big for two reasons: It makes the Bronx Bombers stronger, and their main rival for the AL pennant worse. That means we’ll see a Yankees-Dodgers World Series for the 12th time—but first since 1981. The young Braves might be baseball’s most exciting team, but they simply don’t have the firepower to topple L.A. OUTSIDE SHOTS:…

draft craft

1 Cincinnati Bengals JOE BURROW QB, LSU If Burrow goes No. 1, it would make it three straight seasons when the Heisman Trophy winner went first. It would also mean hope for the Bengals’ struggling franchise. 2. Washington Redskins Chase Young, EDGE, Ohio State The best all-around player in the draft will be a heavy favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. 3. Detroit Lions Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn The Lions need an interior pass rusher to pair with edge rusher Trey Flowers. 4. New York Giants Isaiah Simmons, LB/S, Clemson Simmons is a rare athlete who will be a force in coverage or on the blitz. 5. Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama If not for a late-season hip injury, Tua might have been the No. 1 pick. 6. Los Angeles Chargers Justin Herbert QB, Oregon With Philip Rivers gone, the athletic, strong-armed Herbert could…
