no more college football!

THE ONLY WAY to be sure Notre Dame doesn’t make another College Football Playoff is to get rid of the Playoff … and eventually college football itself. For the second time, the Fighting Irish qualified for college football’s top-four tournament, and for a second time, they got pantsed. After losing 30–3 to Clemson in 2018 (and 42–14 to Alabama in a pre-Playoff BCS championship in 2013), Notre Dame lost this year’s Rose Bowl to Alabama 31–14. While 2013’s championship game spurred calls for a playoff system, this year’s Bama blowout has many fans claiming the system doesn’t go far enough. Arbitrary selection still plays a big role, and as such, the chance of an undeserving team making it remains high. (This column takes no opinion on whether Notre Dame should’ve been…

all his ex-fans are tex-ans

WHILE JAMES HARDEN may have been traded to the Nets, his adventures as a Rocket live on forever in our previous Snowballers comics. (Wait … you don’t throw out old issues of SI Kids, right?) Mikah, age nine, submitted his own version of the NBA adventure, titled Snowballers IV: Into the Belly. Four sea monsters, 12 pirates, and two red magic markers perished in the making of Mikah’s masterpiece. But they did not die in vain. We suspect the Rockets’ best adventures—and Mikah’s finest art—is yet to come. Art Attack Contest WINNER! BIRTHPLACE: VICTOR, IDAHO BIRTH DATE: MAY 5, 2006 SPORT: FREESKIING When Kai Jones grabs air, he feels like he’s flying. The 14-year-old freeskier carves breathtaking lines down backcountry terrain that would humble most adults, and he routinely lands double backflips on the Rocky Mountains’ Teton range. “I’m always nervous, but I’m never scared,” Kai says. He won the International Freeskiers Association U-12 Championship in 2018; later that year he debuted in his first ski film. Kai has appeared in two more movies since then and signed with Red Bull in August. “I want to keep pushing my limits,” Kai says. Are YOU a SportsKid? award tour

RARELY DOES A TROPHY draw as much attention as the person hoisting it. But when world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty won the Yarra Valley Classic in her native Australia in February she got to pose with another Aussie icon: the wombat. Wamba Wamba artist Ron Murray sculpted the marsupial won by Barty, who is of Indigenous heritage. It was just the latest delightful award to make its pro tennis debut. In a sport with so many finals, no single trophy can match the prestige of the Stanley Cup or Lombardi Trophy. But what tennis trophies lack in mystique, they make up for in diversity. MADRID OPEN Paging Led Zeppelin fans: the Ion Țiriac Trophy is meant to resemble a stairway to heaven. It looks to us like a key to the most…

ncaa revival

THE LAST NCAA Football video game from EA Sports, NCAA Football 14, came out in July 2013, before many of you were even born. But you can imagine everything a college simulation has to offer: horrible mismatches, the option, fight songs. After a legal dispute ended the previous game, EA has announced a new version: EA Sports College Football. For now, the company seems content to make a version without player likenesses—the source of the issue that ended the original NCAA line. New laws, however, could mean your favorite players are included before launch. (There’s no release date yet.) In the meantime, please bear with a little back-in-my-day talk, as I promise you this game rocked. Being a virtual Steve Kerr or virtual Bill Belichick is fun. But nothing thrills like the…
