President Joe Biden gave his first State of the Union address on March 1. He spoke before Congress at the United States Capitol. Biden said that Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, would “pay a price” for invading Ukraine. (See “War in Ukraine,” pages 4 and 5.) Biden highlighted the unified response in support of Ukraine by the U.S. and its allies. And he praised Ukrainians for defending their country. Putin “will never weaken the resolve of the free world,” Biden said. Most of the speech focused on problems at home. Prices have been rising for American families as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the economy.
