Our October edition is full of renewed hope and optimism. Despite the huge challenges that the design and interiors industry has faced this year to date, a flurry of exciting new collections have been released against the odds, providing fresh inspiration for every area of the home. We celebrate with our edit of the new collections (page 78) and highlight some favourite updates (page 22 and 24). As autumn is also a time when many tackle home improvements ahead of the winter retreat indoors, we look at how to make the most of our living spaces. seasonal shades

Vibrant pieces with elegant designs offer an enticing combination of playful colour and refined form. Rich hues, such as greens, browns, golds and coppers, sit easily within dark schemes and invest an elegant glamour against a neutral backdrop. To inject bold details, red and plum shades will bring a lively jolt of life, especially within lighter surroundings. Alternatively, ochre and orange colourways energise the mood of any scheme. Add variety, without one tone as a focal point, by incorporating repetitive patterns in multicolours, which results in a subtle colourful approach. PURSUITS The Art Of Marbling Marvelling at the colourful swirling patterns on the endpapers of old books is often our first experience of marbled paper. This ancient craft technique involves floating and manipulating colours on a water solution before transferring them to paper or other items to mimic the patterns of marble stone. Its earliest form is thought to have originated in East Asia before Silk Road trading routes brought it to Turkey. Spectacular effects are easily achievable at home using a few simple items available from craft and art shops or online, with kits also on sale. There are different techniques; one is to lay a piece of paper on top of stirred or combed inks floating atop a tray of water solution, peeling from the corner to reveal the pattern. This makes…

THE SOHO LIGHTING COMPANY Lee Lovett founded The Soho Lighting Company after years of renovating period houses and struggling to find authentic pieces in the right finishes and quantities. Her solution was to make new lighting, switches and sockets inspired by antique and vintage designs, combining a traditional aesthetic with modern technology in high-quality finishes. This allows for the same switch panel to be used throughout a house – something that would be near impossible to achieve by sourcing originals, as well as multiples of the same light – to create a row of three pendants, for example. Along with providing fixtures and fittings, the brand also offers independent consultancy to designers, architects and private clients to ensure rooms are perfectly illuminated. soholighting.com ALTERNATIVE FLOORING Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Alternative Flooring…
