HOCKEY HAS A RAP, bad or otherwise, for being staid, stuck in tradition, resistant to change. That wasn’t always the case. There was a time the game was as innovative as the ShamWow. Granted it was the early 20th Century, the era that gave rise to such marvellous inventions as the teddy bear, fortune cookies and the theory of relativity, so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. As much as anyone, Frank Patrick – with help from brother Lester – was at the business end of hockey’s cutting edge. He’s credited with the construction of hockey’s first artificial rinks in Canada, the introductions of the blueline, forward pass and penalty shots, the creation of assists on goals and an attempt to form a women’s league. And it’s entirely possible Frank (or Lester)…
