editor’s note

EXACTLY FOUR YEARS AGO, I helped put together the December 2014 issue of Travel + Leisure, my first as editor in chief. I had spent many of my formative years as an editor with T+L, in the early 2000s, and it was a dream come true for me to return after nearly a decade away. The most significant thing we did in that first issue of mine was launch our now-annual feature Destination of the Year, a spotlight on the place we believe has resonated the most with travelers over the previous 12 months. In 2014, that was Myanmar, then a country newly developing for tourism and filled with promise (which has sadly been marred more recently by the government’s human rights record).
